What is a MC Number?

Updated May 2025·By Sarah Chen, Lead Safety Analyst·Methodology v2.1

A Motor Carrier operating authority number issued by FMCSA that permits carriers to haul freight or passengers for compensation in interstate commerce.

Full explanation

An MC (Motor Carrier) number is an operating authority identifier issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that grants a carrier legal permission to transport freight or passengers for compensation across state lines. Unlike the DOT number (which is for safety identification), the MC number represents actual operating authority — without it, a carrier cannot legally accept payment for interstate freight movement. The application process requires proof of insurance ($750,000 minimum for general freight, $1,000,000 for household goods, $5,000,000 for hazmat), a process agent designation (BOC-3), and completion of a 10-day protest period during which existing carriers can challenge the application. MC numbers are prefixed with 'MC-' followed by a 6-7 digit number. A carrier's MC number status can be Active, Inactive, or Revoked. Revoked MC numbers often signal serious safety or compliance violations — Truck Graph's risk screening system monitors for carriers that obtain new MC numbers shortly after revocations.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between MC and DOT numbers?

A DOT number is a safety identification number required for all commercial carriers. An MC number is an operating authority that permits carriers to haul freight for compensation. You need both to operate legally in interstate commerce.

How long does it take to get an MC number?

The FMCSA application process typically takes 4-6 weeks. After filing, there is a mandatory 10-day protest period, followed by insurance verification and final grant processing.

Can an MC number be transferred or sold?

No. Operating authority (MC numbers) cannot be sold, transferred, or leased to another entity. When a carrier is acquired, the new owner must apply for their own MC number.
